In memory of former Chief Minister (late) Manohar Parrikar, the BJP-led State govt has proposed to establish a School of Law and Governance in Goa University in the next one and half year.
CM Pramod Sawant announced that the government has made a budgetary provision of Rs 10 crore to establish the School of Law and Governance in the name of Manohar Parrikar.
He mentioned this during his address after the unveiling of the first edition of Konkani Research Journal ‘Sasay’ at Goa University. This was done in the presence of Vice-Chancellor Varun Sahani, Head of Konkani Department Dr Prakash Paryekar and others.
Sawant said that the School of Law and Governance is scheduled to be set up at GU, which would be named after Parrikar, recognising his contribution to the State and the education sector.
“We have already budgeted Rs ten crore for this special project for which separate infrastructure will be created within Goa University. The expertise of all the law colleges would be taken to conceive this unique project,” he said.
He also appealed to GU authorities to take the lead in accomplishing this project, which he said is one of the ambitious educational projects. “It will take at least one to one and half year to complete the infrastructure. The syllabus and other academic requirements would be taken care by the University,” Sawant said.
Parrikar, a stalwart in State politics, died on March 17, this year, due to pancreatic cancer.
Earlier, University VC Varun Sahani urged the CM to be Pro-Chancellor to ensure government’s participation in the functioning of the University. “I would request the Chief Minister to ensure that the necessary Bill is brought into effect during the next session of the State Legislative Assembly,” he said.
