PANJIM: Members of Goa Cycling Club and Cycling Goa will do a fitness ride from Panjim to Banastarim on Sunday to impress upon the government to support cycling in Goa’s urban areas in view of traffic snarls and parking problems.

Members of both these pro-cycling clubs believe cycling among children, students and adults can have a positive impact on health and could transform villages and towns into better places to live.

In a bid to get people back to cycling, the clubs have organized two fitness rides starting from Cafe Coffee Day in Miramar at 7.30 am.

The event is open to all. The non-regular cyclists can do the shorter ride upto Patto, here, and back and the regular ones can opt for the longer version riding upto Banastarim bridge and back. Participants are expected to come to Cafe Coffee Day by 7.15 am. Both the rides will be on irrespective of rain.

Says Joseph Rodrigues of Goa Cycling Club, “It’s time we think of sports and cycling is one of the best ways to keep fit and beat ageing.”

The event, he observes, will give one an opportunity to interact with professional cyclists and learn more about different cycles.

Ajay Dongre of Cycling Goa says, “The basic objective is to inculcate a love for cycling.”

Adds Bryan Soares, president of the club, “We hope to see dedicated cycling lanes in the new master plan for the capital city. Panjim can set an example for other towns to follow.”

Mayor Surendra Furtado said the CCP is aware of the request for cycling lanes and the new master plan will make the necessary provision keeping cyclists in mind.
