Grant for panchayats to tackle garbage

PANJIM: In order to see garbage free villages, State government has sanctioned one-time grant of Rs 1 lakh to the local bodies to tackle the garbage menace. The State has a total of 189 village panchayats.

PANJIM: In order to see garbage free villages, State government has sanctioned one-time grant of Rs 1 lakh to the local bodies to tackle the garbage menace. The State has a total of 189 village panchayats. 
The scheme, Goa Panchayats (Grants to Tackle Garbage Menace) Scheme, 2014, notified on Friday provides financial support to panchayats as grant-in-aid to the local bodies to effectively discharge their duties and functions regarding collection, segregation, treatment and disposal of garbage, employment of daily wage workers, covering 75 houses each working day.
The local bodies are directed to dispose of the bio-degradable garbage through any outside agency or contractor. 
“Panchayats will ensure that all households within its jurisdiction segregate garbage at source and the dry plastic garbage is collected by the panchayat on daily/alternate days/weekly basis from door-to-door and the panchayat area becomes free from dry plastics scattered in drains, gutters, bus stands, road sides or other public places,” the notification, issued by Directorate of Panchayat Raj, reads.
