PANJIM: In a unique initiative aimed towards ‘Green Goa, Clean Goa’, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, pledged to treat his own garbage for which a ‘Home Composting’ unit has been set up at his official residence.
“I will ensure that all the garbage treated at State secretariat and government offices is treated at its source,” he said.
Sawant has nominated Dy CMs Vijai Sardesai, Manohar Ajgaonkar and Leader of Opposition Chandrakant Kavlekar to take similar oaths and install ‘Home Composting’ units at their residences and offices.
“As I have nominated three people, each of them will nominate three more and the chain will continue. This initiative will help us in big way to achieve our goal of clean Goa,” Sawant said adding that ‘the government alone cannot do anything, it has to be done in partnership with people’. Sawant also announced that the government will ensure that Goa becomes garbage free in next five years.
Under Swacch Bharat Abhiyan, the State will launch the ‘Green Goa, Clean Goa’ initiative, aiming at treating the waste at its source.
“We have chalked out a program for the next one year. We know that Goa will not be completely garbage free within a year but if we continue on our path in the next five years, we should be able to see a clean Goa,” he commented.
Sawant will be unveiling the initiative during the 32nd Goa Statehood Day, which will be celebrated on May 30, Thursday, by hosting state-level functions in Panjim and Margao. The panchayat and municipality chiefs are invited for the event in a bid to take the movement forward.
The programme would be held across State throughout the year.
“Government has decided to provide 17,000 bio-digester toilets in the panchayat area. The waste management corporation will issue work order for the same shortly,” CM said.
