Villager says inspections are just eyewash

PONDA: Officials of Goa State Pollution Control Board on Tuesday inspected the controversial laterite stone quarry site at Dhansade-Torla, Shiroda.
According to reports, the GSPCB officials visited the site at about 11 am and based on their inspection report, necessary action will be initiated.
It may be recalled that since August this year villagers have been demanding immediate stoppage of stone quarrying operation. They claimed that following agitation the activity was stopped in 2010. However, the same restarted in August this year.
According to locals, the work at the stone quarry was stopped after newspaper coverage recently.
“Despite numerous complaints to the authorities concerned, no action was taken, allowing the quarrying operation. However, work at the stone quarry was stopped, after it was highlighted in the newspapers,” said Rajesh Naik from Dhansade-Torla.
“We feel that such inspections are just eyewash, as we are demanding stoppage of the activity since August and the authorities concerned have woken up now. We suspect that politicians are pressurising government officers,” alleged Naik.
