PANJIM: Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) on Monday issued show cause notice to ‘Grand Hyatt’, Bambolim, for releasing sewage onto the beach thus creating water pollution and warned the resort of cancellation of its consent to operate if it fails to reply.
The show cause has been issued to M/s Goan Hotels & Club Pvt Ltd. (Hotel Grand Hyatt) under section 33(A) of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974.
Member Secretary of GSPCB Levinson Martins has asked the resort management to reply ‘why the Consent to Operate order dated February 21, 2013, issued to it by this Board under the Water Act should not be revoked or cancelled, for operating the STP at its establishment in a manner that amounts to a violation of the conditions as contained in the said Consent to Operate order and for causing water pollution in the vicinity.
The GSPCB has warned the resort that its Consent to Operate will be cancelled if the resort fails to reply to the notice within the specified time. The hotel was on November 29, 2013, issued a notice by Board over creating environmental pollution and directed to install STP for treatment of waste.
Following media reports, GSPCB had on June 11 and 12, inspected the resort site and drafted a performance report on the functioning of STP. The report indicated that the installed STP was not being efficiently operated and this caused water pollution in the vicinity.
The GSPCB said hotel’s ETP for treatment of laundry waste water was operating without obtaining consent from the Board.
