GU accepts demand of colleges on CBCS

Postpones launch of choice based credit system to next year; most colleges re-open today

PANJIM: As most colleges reopen for the new academic year on Wednesday, Goa University (GU) has accepted their plea for postponement of the launch of Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) to next year.
“The implementation of CBCS at the undergraduate level is held back for the current academic year (2016-17) based on requests from the college principals. They sought time till next year as they are not prepared for its execution at this stage,” GU Registrar Y V Reddy told Herald.
The decision comes after a meeting between college principals, Directorate of Higher Education and GU with Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar. The institutions had raised apprehensions about reduction in the teaching staff and lack of time in understanding the revised syllabus under CBCS.
With a significant drop in the work load owing to CBCS’ implementation, college teachers conveyed fear of losing their jobs during the meeting with Parsekar, who is also the Education Minister. GU allayed apprehensions explaining it would move from ‘semester to credits’ in a phased-manner but, excess staff would certainly be cut down during this period.
