PANJIM: Goa University, the State’s sole varsity is all set for expansion with a global footprint, as it considers establishing a campus overseas.

Governor of Goa and Chancellor of University P S Sreedharan Pillai on Friday informed that the university has already taken steps for its expansion globally and has discussed proposals with several countries.
“Our University is set to spread its wings in form of expansion globally. Some foreign countries have already expressed… all we have to do is support and provide cooperation,” he said while addressing the 33rd Convocation ceremony.
The university, which was established under the Act of 1984, commenced its operation in 1985. Currently, there are 62 colleges affiliated with the varsity, which has peregrinated into the ‘school’ system. There is a total of 10 schools functioning under its aegis.
Further speaking, the Governor proposed setting up Konkani language institutes either in Kochi or Mangaluru or Bangalore for expansion of the language.
“I have proposed this to the university vice-chancellor, who and some experts pointed out to me about some legal impediments as per University Grants Commission (UGC),” he said.
“I told them frankly that whatever may the legal impediments you put it (proposal) before me and will see that the issues are overcome and we are able to expand our language through our university to our other parts of the country also,” he said.
Pillai pointed out that there is sizeable pollution of around two lakhs in Kerala, whose mother tongue is Konkani. “Even in some parts of Karnataka and Maharashtra, Konkani is spoken as mother tongue,” he said.
