Panjim: The North Goa Special Court on Wednesday granted bail to Goa University executive engineer Amit Srivastava who was arrested last week by Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) while accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000.
The Court has asked the accused to deposit a personal bond of Rs 50,000 and a surety of the same amount. Srivastava spent four days in police custody and one day in judicial lockup. The Court had heard arguments in the bail application on Tuesday and reserved the order for Wednesday. Srivastava’s earlier bail application was rejected by the court considering the strong objections put up by ACB.
Opposing the bail, ACB had submitted in court that they needed to check whether Srivastava had accepted bribes from other contractors, and that he is a native of Uttar Pradesh so custody is required to check if ill gotten wealth has been invested there.
Srivastava was arrested for accepting a bribe from a staff of the housekeeping firm Panorama Enterprises owned by Hema Sundar Reddy.
According to the complaint, the executive engineer was demanding five percent of the total value of the work awarded to the housekeeping firm of Goa University campus buildings. Srivastava is charged with section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
