GU issues circular granting 10% more seats in colleges

Will help accommodate higher number of students who have passed HSSC exams

PANJIM: Goa University (GU) on Tuesday finally issued a circular permitting all colleges to increase student intake by 10 percent per division in a bid to accommodate students who have passed the HSSC examination.
Speaking to Herald, GU Registrar, Y V Reddy said, “We are giving a blanket approval to all colleges to increase BA, BCom and BSc seats by 10 percent due to the higher number of students who passed HSSC examinations. In case of BA and BCom the sanctioned strength is 60, so 10 percent extra means they can add 6 students to the strength while in case of BSc the sanctioned strength is 80.”
“We will send this circular to principals of all colleges, with the condition that for those colleges that have asked for an extra division and have been allowed this extra division, the 10 percent additional increase will not be applicable. With an extra division they are entitled to get 60 extra seats,” Reddy said.
Reddy further said that GU will permit colleges which have asked for an additional division subject to NOC from the State government.
“For this additional quota of 10 percent increase in seats, no approval is required from the government because students shall be accommodated in the same class or division while an additional division is subject to a government NOC,” Reddy clarified.
The decision was taken at the meeting of GU’s Academic Council on Monday with the aim that no student is left out or denied admissions.
