PANJIM: Harilal B Menon, Dean of the School of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science of Goa University, has been appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of the varsity with immediate effect.

Menon, a former researcher at Indian Institute of Oceanography, hails from Kerala. He has been associated with the Goa University since 1988. He also becomes the first Vice Chancellor of Goa University who has risen from the ranks.
Menon took charge from Prof Malapati K Janarthanam, who was discharging duty as officiating Vice Chancellor, after the term of Varun Sahni ended on August 18.
Menon’s name was finalised by the Governor and Chancellor PS Sreedharan Pillai from the five academicians, whose names were recommended for the post by the Selection committee.
He has studied Oceanography, Atmospheric science and Ocean science from Cochin University.
Menon has undertaken various studies including impact of mining on the Mandovi-Zuari estuarine system: A study through
remotely sensed and in situ observed data.
Currently he is working on a project to establish a network station at Goa University for atmospheric boundary layer measurements under the NOBLE project. The project is expected to be completed by March 2022.
