OLD GOA: Goa Governor Dr Mridula Sinha on Tuesday called upon the people to inculcate the values and ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, the apostle of non-violence, peace and truth, to create a socially inclusive and progressive society.
Addressing the State Level function organised to mark the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the governor said, “Let us resolve to stop violence. Our mind becomes creative and remains positive when it is free of non-violence. Such a mind is a powerful tool in the process of upliftment and betterment of the society. Gandhiji’s thoughts are noble and we must utilise them in our day to day life.”
She said, “Gandhiji applied the norms of Indian culture with a modern touch. He had realized the importance of self-practice before preaching others and hence, he is our role model when it comes to Cleanliness. He believed that ‘Cleanliness is next to Godliness’ and worked hard towards achieving mental, social and physical well being of self and the society.”
The Governor also urged the people to make Goa No 1 in cleanliness while also stating that State government was playing a crucial role in the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan.
“The state has made constructive progress in this field. A lot of Infrastructures has been created to achieve the target for which we all must unite,” she added
Earlier, the Governor flagged off the ‘Prabhat pheri’ near the Basilica de Bom Jesus in the presence of Union AYUSH Minister Shripad Naik, Chief Secretary Dharmendra Sharma, IAS and Old Goa Sarpanch Janita Madakaikar. The ‘Prabhat ferry’ which was organised by Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs consisted of school children and teachers and senior Government officials.
The Governor also inaugurated stalls put up under ‘Gandhi Samagra’ displaying Goan handicraft, food items and articles. The stalls were put up by Department of Rural Development, Goa State Urban Development Agency, Department of Handicraft, textile and coir, Sanjay Centre for Special Education and Khadi and Village Industries and local self-help groups.
