SANGUEM: A large number of trees have been cut at the Sanguem Industrial Estate to pave way for the construction of sheds and factories.
The wanton destruction of forest trees has raised doubts as to whether due permission has been taken by the plot owners concerned to cut large number of trees in the area.
Taking serious note of the issue, a local organisation under the banner of Yuva Sena has filed a written complaint at the Range Forest Office at Sanguem seeking a detailed inquiry into the tree cutting.
The organisation has sought to know how many trees have been cut and whether any permission is sought by the industrialist concerned to cut the trees.
Sources at the forest department however informed that the trees have been cut as per the licence issued by the department.
Meanwhile, a representative of the company working at the site also claimed of the company did take permission to fell the trees. The company representative further claimed of the trees being numbered before they are felled as the conditions imposed by the licensing authority
However, Yuva Sena spokesman Amar Naik claims that an inquiry into the matter is necessary as a large number of trees have been cut; he doubted that of all the trees which were felled were covered under tree cutting license.
