PANJIM: Goa Police has asked its force to deal with the migrants ‘compassionately’ as many have started their home journey on foot. The frontline personnel have been asked to convince the migrants that government is ensuring their travel arrangements.
“Migrant population from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and many other States are desperately trying to leave Goa for their home districts on foot or by bicycles. We need to handle them with compassion and tell them that several people have met with road accidents while walking home on foot in different parts of the country. Therefore, journey by foot is fraught with dangers and that they should exercise restraint,” Inspector General of Police Jaspal Singh said in a message to the force of 7,000-odd personnel.
“They also need to be told that State administration is in touch with their State government(s) and very soon possibly from next week they will be sent a message by inter-state movement cell about their journey back home.”
Singh said the stranded people will be sent district wise in turn and they need to maintain calm. The migrants are also advised not to visit government offices as their return trip will be announced soon.
“The administration is very well aware of their eagerness to go back home and is doing everything possible to ensure their return back home. Our officers and men at all levels need to handle them in the most compassionate and sympathetic manner,” the IGP said.
