Just days after refusing to step down following the Trinamool Congress’ defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections, Mamata Banerjee has made a subtle but notable change to her social media profile, triggering fresh political debate.
The West Bengal Chief Minister’s bio on X now reads: “Founder Chairperson All India Trinamool Congress. Chief Minister of West Bengal (15th, 16th and 17th Vidhan Sabha).” Earlier, it described her as “Honourable Chief Minister, West Bengal,” a wording that has now been removed.

The update comes shortly after Banerjee firmly rejected calls for her resignation despite the BJP’s sweeping victory in the state. Addressing party workers, she had said she would not step down and instead urged TMC members to observe a “black day” during the first sitting of the new Assembly. She also called for symbolic protests inside the House.
Banerjee has alleged large-scale electoral malpractice, accusing the BJP, Election Commission, CRPF, and sections of the police of working against her party during the elections. She termed the polls “not an election but an atrocity” and claimed several TMC offices had been taken over.
Meanwhile, the BJP’s victory marked a historic shift in Bengal politics, with Suvendu Adhikari sworn in as the new Chief Minister after the party secured a majority. His win in key constituencies, including Nandigram, further cemented the political turnaround in the state.
The quiet change in Banerjee’s bio is being seen by political observers as a symbolic acknowledgment of the new political reality, even as she continues to lead the opposition from within the state.
