PANJIM: The High Court of Bombay at Goa has directed the State government to decide on the applications on licences of rent-a-cab operators within six weeks.
The tussle between taxi owners and rent-a-cab operators had reached the High Court even as the issue has already taken a political turn. The rent-a-cab operators have been demanding that their business be legalised based on Central government norms citing that over 800 applications are pending with the Transport Department for the last two years.
During the hearing, the association’s legal representative argued that the government has kept their applications in abeyance at the behest of tourist taxi operators. The government denied the allegation stating that the operators did not obtain 50 All India Permits, which is a mandatory norm to get licenses. The operators, however, claimed that they have obtained 58 All India Permits by October 13, following which the High Court directed the government to take a decision within six weeks.
