PANJIM: The High Court of Bombay at Goa has issued a notice to the State government over non-functioning of Goa Meat Complex.
Quraishi Meat Traders Association had filed a petition before the High Court pleading directions to the State government to start Goa Meat Complex as soon as possible.
They had contended that meat traders are unable to supply fresh meat due to non-functioning of slaughter facilities at Meat Complex. Goa’s sole abattoir, which has been shut since October last year, could not restart after a new stunning gun, used as part of the animal slaughtering protocol, developed snags.
Quraishi Meat Traders Association of Goa (QMTAG) president Manna Bepari said that non-functioning of the abattoir since October last year was resulting in a shortage of beef in Goa.
“The actual requirement of beef in Goa is to the tune of 20-25 tonnes per day which can be met only if the state government-run Goa Meat Complex starts functioning,” Bepari said.
