HC takes suo motu cognisance of haphazard quarrying of laterite stones at Sanguem

PANJIM: The High Court of Bombay at Goa on Monday took suo motu cognisance of the haphazard quarrying of laterite stones in Pansaimol, Sanguem and issued notices to State government, Archaeological Survey of India, Director of Archives and Archaeology and other authorities.

The High Court’s suo motu was based on a newspaper report stating that the haphazard quarrying of laterite stones in Pansaimol, Sanguem was posing a threat to the prehistoric rock carvings.

The alleged operations without permission from Forest Department, Goa State Pollution Control Board or the Directorate of Mines and Geology, was brought to light during a government inquiry.

The rock carvings were recommended by the Union government to be included in the world heritage site.
