MARGAO: Shadow Council for Margao (SCM) has accused the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) of neglecting the maintenance of the old Hospicio Hospital complex. The SCM’s statement comes after the department issued a warning a week ago, alleging interference on the hospital premises.
The Archdiocese had earlier proposed to the government to allot a portion of the hospital for setting up a charitable care center, which was ignored by the government. “Had the request of the Archdiocese been considered, the premises would have been given due attention. However, the health department is more interested in renting out the premises for film shooting, without considering how the workers and film crew are misusing the premises,” said SCM convenor Savio Coutinho.
Coutinho further questioned the department’s commitment to preserving the hospital. “When the Health department cannot even fix a water leak despite being informed, how will they take care of this heritage structure?” he remarked. SCM has demanded that the DHS inspect the premises and take appropriate measures to protect them from the upcoming monsoons.
