CANACONA/PERNEM/VALPOI: Fire Stations all over Goa were kept on their toes as they were inundated with distress calls, mostly relating to falling trees and damage to property, caused due to heavy winds and rain on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, even as the meteorology department has warned that strong winds would continue for the next few days.
Canacona fire department received reports of trees that got uprooted or snapped at nine different places in Canacona, with three falling on the house of former minister Fatima D’Sa at Mongon. There were no reports of injuries, though the minister claimed to have suffered a loss of over Rs 8 lakh.
In Valpoi, a coconut tree fell on a house at Nagvem village. Nobody was hurt in the incident, but goods worth Rs 1 lakh was destroyed.
An appeal has also been made by residents to cut old trees that pose danger to people and property in the area and soon a memorandum will be handed over to the concerned government department in this regard.
In Pernem, trees fell at different locations on Thursday, damaging houses and blocking main roads for hours.
A tamarind tree came down on the main road blocking it for almost two-and-half hours, while a coconut tree and pipal tree fell on the main road near Tiracol police outpost.
In Naibagh, a jackfruit tree fell on the house of Gurunath Teli at around 7 am causing loss of Rs 50,000, while a cashew tree fell on the house of Swapnil Aroskar causing loss of Rs 15,000.
Meanwhile, the Director of Meteorology M L Sahu has cautioned people warning that strong winds are likely in many places in Goa, with gust speed going up to 60 kms for the next couple of days.
