PANJIM: Heavy rains accompanied by strong, gusty winds continued to lash Goa on Wednesday, as Cyclone Nisarga made landfall over Maharashtra. The State received nearly 100.9mm of rainfall.

Goa experienced heavy rain, gusty winds, thunder and lightning on Tuesday and Wednesday, leading to water logging, flooding in low-lying areas, uprooting of trees and damage to houses. One casualty was reported in Valpoi.

Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa observatory has forecast heavy rains for the State on Thursday. With the sea condition being rough, IMD has asked fishermen not to venture into the waters.

IMD said the cyclone is likely to maintain its cyclonic storm intensity, as it moved away from the Goa coast.

As per IMD, the dissipation of the current cyclonic system will decide the further advancement of south-west monsoon, which set over Kerala coast on June 1. “If the monsoon currents are of sufficient strength even with reduced rainfall, the monsoon onset may be around June 6 over Goa,” IMD scientist Rahul Mohan said.
