MARGAO: Frenetic scenes were witnessed in Margao near the Kurade petrol pump opposite the municipal garden on Wednesday morning when the traffic police launched a strict drive to enforce the helmet rule.
The public were upset as it caused traffic jams as the place is also used by busses to stop. There was further congestion during peak hours when parents going to pick or drop school children were stopped by police.
“The Traffic Police led by DSP Mhapne went on an overdrive to fine motorists without crash helmets and most were taken unaware as in Margao city, no special effort was made to enforce the rule. While laws are made to be enforced one wonders why the same traffic personnel were overlooking buses which were making unscheduled stops at the side to collect passengers,” said Margao resident Jose Maria Miranda.
“When questioned Mhapne retorted that there were other personnel looking into it which in fact was not the case.” added Miranda. The traffic police stated that they had received instructions to enforce the drive on all roads.
