The department is also inquiring whether Anjuna Police Inspector Paresh Naik protected the duo despite revelations from the rescued victims of prostitution that PI Rane and PC Naik exploited them physically and financially.
“We initiated inquiry followed by disciplinary enquiry against both (Rane and Naik) based on your (Herald) news reports. They were also transferred from main police stations to Goa Reserve Police to ensure a fair enquiry. Any further action will depend on the DE report,” Director General of Police Muktesh Chander told Herald.
The inquiry will also investigate the role of the Anjuna PI, who is being accused of refusing to name the erring cops in the FIR despite the girls accusing the two policemen of sexually exploiting them and extorting money at Calangute. “We are inquiring into these allegations also,” he added.
Herald was the first to expose the case hidden away in the Anjuna Police Station files following which the police top brass sought a preliminary inquiry through Special Branch on April 28, 2016. The report indicted PI Rane and constable Naik based on statements of witnesses.
The scandal came to the fore when Anjuna Police busted a prostitution racket and rescued two girls from West Bengal. One of the rescued girls revealed the nexus between the policemen and pimps who operated the racket.
