High power bills shock Mormugao residents

Officials say the Department provides only meter readings to a private company which generates bills

VASCO: While the residents across Goa are yet to recover from the shock of enhanced bills due to the imposition of the fuel and power purchase cost adjustment (FPPCA) charges earlier, the residents of Mormugao taluka have complained that they were shocked to find a huge increase in their monthly bills recently, in some of the cases even double.
Several consumers complained to this correspondent that they had received inflated bills with several additional charges and moreover the bills have been generated on average consumption and not as per actual meter readings.
Some even claimed that instead of getting monthly bills, they receive inflated bills of accumulated amounts at an interval of two-three months, which now have affected their budget.
“Earlier, we used to receive monthly electricity bills of Rs 500-700, however this time, I was shocked to find a huge increase in the electricity bills,” said Seema Rao, a housewife from Dabolim.
Likewise, several other consumers had similar complaints, many of them even marched to the electricity office with the hope that their bills would be rectified, however returned disappointed.
Meanwhile, when this correspondent contacted the Vasco electricity department officials, they informed that they too had received such complaints and claimed that they did not have any idea as to why the bills are higher this time.
Bills are now being generated by software provided by a private company and we have no direct link with generation of bills. Our people only provide them meter readings and rest of the work is done by them, an official said.
