Hindi soaps, carrom keep Mickky occupied in jail

PANJIM: Expect Nuvem MLA Francisco (Mickky) Pacheco to speak fluent Hindi once he walks out of jail five months from now.

This qaidi number 53, lodged in cell number 14 at Sada sub-jail has been watching Doordarshan’s national channel and playing carom with fellow inmates since the six-month long imprisonment began on June 1.
Pacheco’s TV viewing includes the daily soaps, Hindi movies on weekends and the news, besides other shows on DD.
Jail sources confirmed that Pacheco is ‘doing nothing’ but watching TV and playing carrom. “Each of the 14 cells in the jail has one TV with only DD channel connection and a carrom board to keep the inmates occupied. Mickky is doing the same. On certain occasions he watches daily soaps and also movies that are broadcast on the weekend,” an official told Herald.
Sources said he has displayed a liking for Marathi films telecast on Sunday afternoon, while keeping himself abreast of the latest happening across the country and globe through the news.
“We have not given cable connection to any TV,” the official said. “Mickky mingles with other inmates in his cell and plays carrom when he is not watching TV or sleeping during the day. We also provide newspapers if needed,” the official said.
Pacheco has opted for tailoring as an activity during his six-month prison sentence but sources confirm he has not begun any tailoring yet. Incidentally, the owner of 11 flashy cars began his career as a tailor’s assistant.
Pacheco’s sentence for slapping a junior electricity engineer Kapil Natekar in 2006 will end on November 30. Pacheco had surrendered on June 1 after two months in hiding. Additional Inspector General of Prisons Deepak Desai declined to comment on the issue. “I have nothing to say,” was his only comment.
