On September 21, 1890, 23 heroes laid down their lives for the cause of free and fair elections at the Margao Camara. Sadly, the building which is the only memory of the sacrifice seems to be shackled in time.
Historian Prajal said that they have and would keep protesting against any move to demolish the building. He said that it is important for the society to realise that it has a responsibility to protect the heritage structures.
“The rich history of the building and events under the Portuguese rule which claimed the lives of 23 people who opposed the rigging of the Municipal elections by the Portuguese is still fresh. September 21, 1890, was the day when 23 martyrs lost their lives in the firing ordered by the Portuguese,” Prajal said.
The Heritage group led by Prajal along with former MMC chairperson Savio Coutinho had earlier met the chief officer to apprising him of the dilapidated condition of the Camara building.
The building is included in the list of 17 dilapidated and dangerous buildings which are being proposed for demolition.
The issues with the handover of this building to MMC have remained unsolved and the Heritage group has decided to keep an eagle eye on the entire process.
