Desai’s responsibility is to be the lead change agent in cleaning up the beaches, but he
needs to start by cleaning up acute differences between various stakeholders
What you feel are the present problems adding to the garbage issue?
Desai: Some hoteliers dump the remains/ garbage on the beach during nights. We are not able to track them down, since this is the easiest way to dump trash. We are working out strategies to keep a watch and prosecute the guilty. For this, we are also planning to rope in the police. We don’t want beaches to be a dump yard.
What is your plan of action to sort this out?
We have appointed Ram Engineering, a Mumbai-based company that will do integrated beach cleaning including segregation, composting, and baling of plastic along the 105-km coastline. The waste will be sent to a site given by Goa State Pollution Control Board. Moreover, each shack will be given two bins and dustbins will be placed every 100 metres on all the beaches. The execution part is what is only remaining. Similarly, the cans, metals, bottles and other such materials will be collected and sent to scrap dealers. The agency will start the implementation within 30 days of the files getting cleared.
