CANACONA, AUG 20
Two failed daring attempts of robberies by break opening two houses in different localities at Canacona on Friday morning almost shook the locals out of their wits.
In an almost identical operation spanning within hour of each other, one house at Agonda and another at Mastimoll (situated within 100 mtrs of Canacona Police station) were broke open.
The incidents occurred when the inmates had gone to their respective work, but the culprits fled from the scene without booty, after reportedly noticed by others around.
In the first instance, two miscreants on a motorcycle stopped to break open the main door of a house belong to one Prashant Naik Gaunkar of Agonda at about 11 am. As usual, the inmates of the house, couple, had left for work at about 7 am.
Since the house is in an isolated location, but situated just across the State road passing through Agonda, one person entered inside and the other latched the broken main door from outside and stationed outside the compound gate.
The man inside reportedly broke open one cupboard, ransacked it to find nothing except books and a laptop, and perhaps while attempts were made to open another cupboard, the man had to flee through the back door empty handed reportedly after he received a signal from the man outside.
The man outside sent warning, reportedly after observing a woman working in plantation.
After duly informed, the house occupants reached from their respective working places and were relieved to find that nothing was taken away.
Police were called, who searched the dense forest behind the house and are reportedly on look-out for any suspicious looking characters frequenting the village.
In the second incident, main door of a house belonging to one Abhay Rane situated barely within 100 mtrs from Canacona Police station, was broke open, after the inmates had left for their work place.
Sources informed that the modus operandi is a similar one, again by two persons, but luckily for Rane, his neighbours saw the unusual movement and while trying to inform others, the man standing outside warned the inside man and swiftly fled from the scene.
Nothing was taken away from this house also, informed the sources.
These two incidents have also perplexed several residents in the taluka with few demanding that police start patrolling the residential localities and keep an eye on residential houses, especially of working people.
A few thefts including daylight robberies in the past have also shaken the residents, but the two acts on a single day almost in identical manner has again brought those memories back, claimed locals.
“Police should exercise proper surveillance in these localities and put behind bars any suspiciously moving characters in villages trying to target unoccupied houses,” demanded the locals.
