MARGAO: When Inspector General of Police, Sunil Garg visited the Colva police station on Wednesday, he came across a complaint that the men in uniform take too much time to respond to calls to crack a whip against prostitution raising its ugly head in the tourist village.
Activist Judith Almeida drew attention of the IGP that the response time of the Colva police has been unsatisfactory when called to attend to cases involving prostitution.
The IGP admitted that the police ought to be quick in attending to complaints, but said that the situation will improve after the 76 lady police sub-inspectors are recruited and posted at various police stations across the State after undergoing training.
Garg expressed confidence that after these trained LPSI join the force, there would be relief to women in particular at police station as they would find it comfortable to interact. The IGP stated that the Colva police station has manpower more than the sanctioned strength as the sanctioned staff is 51 and presently the staff at the Colva police station is 66. He agreed that this sanction was very old. He also informed members of the public that the ATS as well as the Special Branch of Police have been activated. He requested public to cooperate with police by being the eyes and ears.
Speaking on various issues and problems raised by the villagers the IGP promised that his department shall take up the issue of non functioning street lights with electricity department and that night patrolling would be increased and that CCTV cameras would be installed at Colva police station. He also said that constables on beat duty would keep contact with senior citizens, particularly those residing alone and that police personnel shall be sensetized for better behaviour.
Meanwhile, citizens residing within the jurisdiction of Cuncolim police station told the IGP during his visit to the police station there, that the police should intensify night patrolling and posts additional manpower to meet the growing requirements.
