A six-member joint expedition team from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering and the Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering & Winter Sports successfully summited Mount Aconcagua in Argentina on February 22 at 2:10 pm, marking a significant milestone for Indian mountaineering.
Standing at 6,961 metres, Aconcagua is the highest peak in South America and the second-highest mountain outside Asia. The team was led by Col Hem Chandra Singh, Principal of both institutes. The expedition was flagged off by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on February 5.

Following their arrival in Argentina on February 8, the climbers acclimatised by scaling Bonete Peak (5,050 metres) before launching the final summit push. They braved extreme weather, including strong winds and temperatures between minus 20°C and minus 30°C.
The successful ascent highlights India’s growing prominence in global mountaineering.
