BICHOLIM: Seven inmates in a house had a lucky escape when a large tree came crashing down on two houses at Vathadev-Bicholim, as heavy rains along with strong winds caused havoc in Bicholim taluka for the second day.
A number of trees were uprooted in different parts of Bicholim, causing damage to property, disrupting power supply and blocking roads in the area.
At Vathadev, a mango tree fell on two houses belonging to Arun Umarye and Pramod Gobre at about 4 am and seven family members of the Gobre family had a lucky escape.
“The tree got uprooted and thanks to the branches that supported it, the tree did not come crashing down on the house. We had requested the owner to prune his tree as it was dangerously close to the houses, but he did not pay heed to our pleas,” Gobre said.
In another incident, a mango tree fell on the house of one Pradeep Volvoikar from Jambhulbhat Mayem, causing a loss of about Rs 25,000.
At Shirodwadi-Mulgao, tree fell on the house of Pratapsingh Purohit, while a cow shed was damaged after a tree got uprooted at Mayem.
Uprooted trees were also reported at Mayem, Narve and other places. The fire force officials under the supervision of A S Dhawaskar attended to various incidents in the taluka.
