MARGAO: Pursuant to recent directions given by the State government, an inspection was held on Friday at the Sonsoddo garbage treatment site to expedite the ongoing work and resolve the recurring delays.

The Managing Director (MD) of the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) Levinson Martins, agencies that work with GWMC, Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Damu Shirodkar along with municipal engineers and some councillors were present for the inspection.
At the end of the meeting, a deadline of February 2023 was set by Martins for
clearing the legacy dump site at Sonsodo.
“ There were issues with refuse-derived fuel (RDF) not moving fast and due to that we were not having enough space to put more machinery. So once that is done, we can clear the waste faster,” said Martins.
Regarding the other issues at Sonsodo, Martins stated that it was a matter of tweaking a few things as waste comes every day and thus decisions have to be made on a daily basis too.
“We are streamlining the operations here. The payments also have to be made faster. We will visit the plant every 15 days and review everything. The shed will also be repaired,” Martins added.
Kamat emphasized that only by conducting periodic fortnightly revisions, the situation will improve. He urged the authorities to clear bills quickly so that there are no more delays in getting raw materials, machinery and that such requirements should be cleared at their meetings so that there are no financial issues thereafter.
Kamat further added that they are trying to get 4 baling machines at the plant and that the Power Department officials were also called to give all the electrical connections that are required.
He added that issues with the machinery inside the plant are being addressed and that garbage will no longer be piled up against the walls of the shed in view of recent incidents where walls have collapsed due to the pressure on them.
