MARGAO: Winds of instability hit the 10-member Cuncolim Municipal Council.
Six members of the civic body, led by Vice-Chairperson Landry Mascarenhas have tabled a motion of no confidence against a beleaguered CMC Chairperson Devendra Desai.
While confirming that a no trust motion has been tabled against the CMC Chairperson, Director of Municipal Administration, Elvis Gomes has called a meeting of the Cuncolim Civic body on June 30 to discuss the motion.
It is learnt that the no trust motion has been signed by Landry, Crossy Fernandes, Pollita Carneiro, Naguesh Chitari, Premdeep Desai and Mangaldas Gaonkar.
Sources in the BJP camp headed by Cuncolim MLA Rajan Naik said that the group will support Landry’s candidature for the post of Chairperson. It is learnt that Landry will hold the reigns of office for some months before paving the way for his colleague councillor to take over.
When contacted, Devendra said that he would take a decision whether to quit office or not on Thursday. He said he would offer his full support to Landry if the BJP is willing to support his (Landry’s) candidature) without making the vice-chairperson join the BJP.
Incidentally, both Devendra and Landry belong to the Congress-backed camp, and as per the agreement, Devendra was to step down after holding the office for two-and-a-half years to pave way for Landry to take over the reigns. Devendra, however, did not step down from office on the plea that the ruling group was reduced to five members in a 10-member body and the group was unsure of victory in the event of election for the post of chairperson.
