CALANGUTE: The Calangute police on Thursday busted an inter-state gang of mobile thieves with the arrest of 12 persons from Maharashtra at Baga.
Police said they received a complaint from Jitesh Mehta, a resident of Maharashtra, that on Wednesday when he was visiting a popular park at Baga, some unknown person committed theft of his Samsung mobile phone, following which an offence was registered.
During investigations, after checking the CCTV footage, the police managed to nab the thieves within hours of the crime. The police also found that a gang consisted of 12 members, all of whom had come to Goa to steal mobile phones from tourists during the Sunburn festival and at other tourist places. They had planned to enter Sunburn by purchasing tickets, police said.
“The primary targets of these gangs were tourists. Their main target was branded mobile phones. We have recovered 41 mobiles, of which maximum are Apple iPhones. All the phones are worth Rs 30 lakh,” Superintendant of Police North Goa Nidhin Valsan said.
He said, “The police have also seized the car in which they had come down in the State.”
“Eight grams of MDMA was also seized from these thieves. During interrogation, we have come to know of more such thieves, and we have already informed our teams about capturing them. Our intelligence network was on the radar, and we caught these accused. A case has been registered, and further investigation is in progress,” the SP informed.
