PANJIM: To make Panjim smart and new, why is the old and steady being damaged? This is what people in Panjim are asking as they see water pipelines, cables for utility services, etc, getting damaged since the commencement of the work to construct the first smart road at Campal-Panjim.

Porvorim and the contractor has currently started the digging work near Bal Bhavan, Campal-Panjim to lay new utilities along the dedicated corridor for utility services. In the process there have been complaints of old water supply pipeline being damaged besides causing damages to other underground and overhead cables.
When contacted, sources in the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA), the executing agency said the contractor has been asked to take necessary precautions to minimise the inconvenience caused to the public. At the same time, they said that there could be some minor disruptions or damages.
The GSUDA has now asked all private service operators having their overhead and underground cables along the road to contact the GSUDA office, Patto-Panjim immediately.
The two smart roads approved by the IPSCDL are from the Old Patto Bridge to Four Pillars Junction and from Vivanta by Taj, St Inez Junction to Adarsh Colony, Miramar. However, this road will also include construction of a Smart Road from Fire and Emergency Services Junction up to Bal Bhavan and the road from Bashik Junction up to the Hindu crematorium, St Inez.
The estimated cost of both the Smart Roads is Rs 141 crore and will be built on Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) mode.
