MARGAO: Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao on Thursday requested the concerned petitioners to withdraw the case from National Green Tribunal (NGT) in order to carry out the works to protect the beaches, which are getting destroyed due to soil erosion.
He along with the officials of the Disaster Management Authority, Rural Development Authority, Cavelossim sarpanch Dionizio Dias and a few locals inspected the Mobor and Cavelossim beaches.
He said due to global warming and rising sea levels, coastal villages are threatened and hence it is high time to take preventive measures to protect the beaches.
Churchill assured to bring this issue to the notice of the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.
“There is an urgent need of a protection wall to stop further erosion. However, work cannot be carried out due to the case pending before the NGT. Hence, I plead the petitioners to withdraw the case so that our beaches are protected”, he urged.
He assured to take a delegation to the Chief Minister to discuss the issue.
“To save our beaches and coastal villages we all need to come together and keep aside all differences and conflicts. We will also meet the CM to discuss and resolve the issues of the fishing community of Mobor, Cavelossim”, he said.
Cavelossim sarpanch said there is a case pending before the NGT, which is a major hurdle in constructing a training wall at the seaside and retaining wall on the riverside.
“To protect the beaches from further destruction training wall at the seaside and retaining wall on the riverside need to be built on an urgent basis,” he stated.
Roy Barretto, a local said due to global warming, and rise in sea levels, coastal villages are threatened.
“After the Cyclone Tauktae our coastal villages are devastated, hence taking initiative in protecting the coastline by way of a protection wall before the disaster happens is the need of the hour,” he urged.
