Over last couple of years the farmers from Canacona taluka started showing interest in polyhouse farming with Canacona Zonal agricultural office receiving over 100 proposals to set up polyhouses. An absence of employment opportunities, assurances of better returns and less dependence on climatic conditions, compared to open field farming was the main reason for the farmers from the taluka to take a big leap in to the hitech farming activity.
There exists twenty five polyhouses ranging from 500 to 4000 sq Mts in Canacona taluka constructed since last two years with a total area of 6.7 Hectares already under polyhouses in the taluka, out of which 5.3 Hectares is under Orchid cultivation while rest of the farmers have opted for gerbera, capsicum and cucumber.
Unavailability of market close to the production area is a major obstacle faced by all the polyhouse farmers in the taluka.
The produce is either sold locally at the Margao market or sent to Bangalore, Pune.
