The JICA examination which was initiated to find the chemical contamination of the river has eventually revealed that the river has been contaminated with sewage and the level of oxygen in the river is very low. However, the project did not find any chemical contamination.
The project has been going on for two years and after the chemical contamination of Sal was found negative, the authorities moved on to the Cuncolim and Bethora Industrial Estate to trace chemical deposits. The JICA officials and researchers have also dug several bore wells and given advanced machinery to keep a check on the contamination in industrial estates.
The JICA India head Kawa Mora and others from allied research agencies were present at the meet. The GSPCB has further urged the JICA to take up some more projects for Goa, some ideas of which have been liked by the officials and are willing to return soon.
