PANJIM: With Goa government directing ban on the sale of ‘Johnson and Johnson’ baby shampoo as directed by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), the company has reiterated that their products are safe.
Company spokesperson said their products undergo various procedures to ensure its products meet the safety standards. “J&J unequivocally maintains that our products are safe to use and our assurance process is amongst the most rigorous in the world, meeting or exceeding the safety standards in every country where our products are sold,” the spokesperson said in a press statement issued on Thursday.
“We reiterate that Johnson’s Baby Shampoo does not contain any harmful ingredient as erroneously concluded in a Rajasthan government laboratory test conducted with unknown and unspecified test methods. We have challenged the test results and the samples have been sent for re-testing at the Appellate laboratory by way of a Magistrate Court Order. As the test report itself is controverted under Section 25(3) of the D&C Act, such a report is not considered conclusive,” it said.
The Department of Women & Child Development, in its communication to Departments of Health Services, Goa Police, Labour, Food & Drug Administration and Legal Metrology cited the report from Drug Control Organisation, Rajasthan that the sample of Johnson baby shampoo was declared as not of standard quality considering that it has presence of formaldehyde. “Under Section 13(1) of CPCR Act, 2005, the NCPCR is of the view that directions may be issued to stop sale of Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo in the markets. Therefore, you are requested to take action deemed fit at your end and furnish details directly to the NCPCR with intimation to the Directorate,” the department said.
The company countered the claim stating Johnson’s Baby Shampoo does not contain formaldehyde.
“Given that the re-testing process is underway with the appellate laboratory, no arbitrary action on the said two batches of Johnson’s Baby Shampoo is, in our opinion, warranted,” the spokesperson added.
