MAYEM: The joint monitoring team comprising three superintendent engineers from Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra on Wednesday conducted inspection of the Kalsa canal at Kankumbi and expressed satisfaction over the work undertaken by the Karnataka government.
The Karnataka government carried out the work to plug both the vents of the Kalsa canal to avoid diversion of water to Malaprabha. A monitoring report has been prepared by the three-member committee and it will be submitted to the Mhadei Water Dispute Tribunal on Friday.
It may be recalled that the Tribunal in an interim order dated April 17 directed Karnataka to complete plugging work of both the vents of the canal by May 31 to prevent diversion of water to Malaprabha. The Tribunal had appointed a three-member panel comprising superintendent engineers from Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka to inspect the work done by Karnataka and directed them to submit report.
Accordingly, superintendent engineers Shrikant Patil (Goa), K H Ansari (Maharashtra) and Ashok Vasnad (Karnataka) inspected the site on Wednesday and expressed satisfaction over the work done.
Retired EE from Karnataka, Narsanha Annavar, under whose supervision the work was carried out, was also present for the meeting.
“We have inspected the site and came to the conclusion that the work carried out by Karnataka is as per the direction of the Tribunal and is quite satisfactory and we will submit the report to the Tribunal on Friday,” said panel member from Goa Patil.
Retired EE from Karnataka Narsanha Annavar said: “In-spite of pre-monsoon showers and incidents of landslides, the Karnataka government was successful in completing the work with the help of giant machineries and required manpower.”
R S Panday and Pranod Kamble from Maharashtra and Gopinath Desai from Goa were also present for the meeting.
Attorney General of Goa Adv Atmaram Nadkarni, who had also inspected the site twice, was instrumental in putting forward Goa’s case strongly. With the completion of the work now it won’t be possible for the Karnataka government to divert Mhadei river water to Malaprabha.
