MAYEM: The Karnataka Niravari Nigum (KNN) has restarted the work of Kalsa canal at Kankunbi ahead of the Tribunal’s visit on December 18.
The work was stopped for few days following landslide last week.
The Mhadei Water Dispute Tribunal team will visit Kalsa from December 18 to 24 and sign boards welcoming the team have been erected at Chorla, Kankumbi and other dam areas in Kankumbi.
According to reports, the Mhadei Bachav Abhiyan secretary along with some volunteers of Vivekanand Environment Brigade (VEB) visited Kalsa and other dam areas in Chorla and Kankumbi on Monday and noticed that many new construction activities have been undertaken by Karnataka.
“The proposed dam sight of Haltara dam is in Chorla near Sateri Kelbai Temple at Kelicho Pat and the source of potable water is under threat,” said a volunteer.
Santosh Gaonkar, member of Thane Dongurli representing Surla, said: “Our village is facing a lot of problems due to Kalsa and Haltara dam and also due to construction of the diversion canal and open-cut canal.”
Dasharath Morajkar, VEB member, said the work of Haltara dam will drastically reduced the water flowing into Valvanti River and create shortage of drinking water for Padocem, Assonora and Sanquelim water treatment plants.
Virdi Sarpanch Ankush Gawas said: “The work of Haltara dam will create problems for our lifeline — River Valvanti. We will submit a memorandum to Mhadei Water Dispute Tribunal during its visit.”
