MARGAO: A group of secular-minded citizens have appealed to former Chief Minister Digambar Kamat to kick start the election campaign of Congress candidate Reginaldo Lourenco in Margao, with the BJP virtually enjoying a free run in the city since the last few days.
The citizens called on Kamat with a plea to start the campaign given that the BJP leadership has not left a single stone unturned to make their big presence in the commercial capital ahead of the April 12 election. While the BJP has completed a number of rounds in various wards of the city, the Congress is yet to make its presence felt in the city. Barring a meeting of workers held prior to the Congress meeting at Lohia Maidan last month, Margao is yet to witness any Congress workers meetings till date.
The delegation impressed upon Kamat that the BJP cannot be allowed to take a grip over Margao in the Lok Sabha poll and has asked him to work with same vigour of 2012 Assembly poll to ensure the Congress candidate takes a lead over his BJP counterpart in the city.
When Herald contacted Kamat he said he had a meeting with his workers at his residence on Thursday morning to chalk out a plan of action. “The workers are gearing up for the polls. We will hold a series of workers meeting, beginning next week”, he said. Sources said the former Chief Minister has told his workers that all is not lost at Moti Dongor, though the BJP is making a determined bid to storm the hillock this coming election. Kamat is believed to have told his workers to ensure that the Congress go all out to retain its hold over Moti Dongor. Sources in the know said the Sardinha factor has also come to play in Margao politics within the Congress. It is learnt that Sardinha had enjoyed a lot of goodwill amongst Hindu and Christian voters in the city, many of whom are distributed at the manner in which he was treated by the party leadership.
