PONDA: Kavlem panchayat on Thursday demanded that the government come out with a permanent solution to stray cattle menace and also called upon the four MLAs from Ponda taluka to identify a place for setting up a pound for these animals.

Kavlem sarpanch Rajesh Kavlekar said, “This is not a new problem, but the same needs to be resolved by the government.”
Kavlekar said, “In case of Ponda, all the four MLAs should come forward and solve the problem by identifying a common place for cattle pound. The cattle pose threat to motorists and even fatal accidents have occurred in the past.”
“This week Kavlem panchayat disposed five cattle, found dead at various places,” he informed and urged the government to look into this matter seriously and find a permanent solution.
Kavlekar said, “The panchayat is doing its best to prevent stray cattle from squatting on the streets. The panchayat has no land of its own to set up a cattle pound. The existing pound is very small.”
The demand comes following several reports highlighting the danger these stray cattle pose to motorists commuting along the route. Motorists claim that these cattle have become a nuisance even on the internal roads.
