VASCO: Goa Customs officials on Wednesday arrested a Kerala native for carrying assorted foreign currencies worth Rs 25.6 lakh at Dabolim airport. He was later released on bail after he produced two local sureties of Rs 50 thousand each.
According to sources, the officials of Air Intelligence Unit of Goa Customs were screening all the passengers intending to board Air Arabia flight going to Dubai via Sharjah at about 4 am.
During the screening, it came to light that Anwar Sadiq Abdul Rehiman had concealed assorted currencies including Saudi and Qatar riyals, dirhams and US dollars worth Rs 25.6 lakh in his hand baggage and had failed to give declaration of the same before leaving county.
“As per Customs norms, Indian passengers coming from abroad or going abroad and carrying over Rs 7,500 and US $ 5,000 need to make declaration about the same.
Since the passenger failed to do so, he was arrested under Section 104 of Customs Act. The accused was released after producing two local sureties of Rs 50,000 each.
The assorted currency has been seized. The accused has been asked to report to the customs office for five days.
Meanwhile, Goa Customs sources informed that officials of Intelligence Bureau met its officials and sought details of the accused.
