It’s over a decade since the Khareband Bridge over River Sal linking Margao city to Benaulim and Salcete coastal belt was commissioned during the previous BJP regime. Sadly, despite umpteen requests and complaints from the neighbouring Benaulim Panchayat, neither the PWD nor the Traffic Department have moved with alacrity to develop the traffic junction, which has witnessed many an accident in recent years. Sources in the know said the Benaulim Panchayat had knocked the doors of the authorities, including the district authorities, several times, but in vain. The gram sabha too had adopted a number of resolutions calling for a scientific development of the junction to check accidents, but nothing has changed the ground reality till date.
When Herald sought to known from a senior traffic cop to find out the delay in developing the Khareband Bridge junction, he pushed the blame on the PWD officials, claiming that proposals for development of the junction have been pending with the PWD.
