Konkani enthusiasts demand recognition for Roman script in official capacities

Set to approach Central Linguistic Minority Cell to address ‘discrimination against the Roman script’ in Official Language Act of Goa

MARGAO: Konkani enthusiasts, at their second meeting held in Margao, have resolved to approach the Central Linguistic Minority Cell to a the discrimination against Konkani’s Roman script in the Official Language Act of Goa. Konkani activist Domnic Fernandes stated that several intellectuals attended the meeting, committing to organising mass mobilisation at the village-level to advocate for justice for Konkani written in the Roman script.

During the meeting at the Holy Spirit Church Hall in Margao, attendees discussed various issues concerning the marginalisation of Roman script Konkani within Goa’s language policies. Strategies were deliberated to seek equal recognition and representation of Roman script Konkani in official capacities.

Domnic Fernandes, declaring the meeting highly successful, informed that one of the crucial resolutions includes appealing to the Linguistic Minority Cell to address the discrimination against the Roman script in tahe Official Language Act. A committee has been formed to adavance the movement, focusing specifically on legal aspects.

“In the coming days, mass mobilisation will be carried out at the village level, forming groups to rally community support,” said Fernandes.
