PANJIM: A grand assembly (maha mellavo) of the KTC Drivers and Allied Employees Association, affiliated to AITUC on Friday decided to serve a strike notice on the Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited (KTCL) management and conduct a ‘militant programme’ to ensure a successful strike.
The KTCL workers have been agitating since the last two years in support of their demands i.e. signing memorandum of agreement for the implementation of the Seventh Pay Commission; payment of 34 months’ arrears of the Seventh Pay Commission; regularise the services of over 300 Badli (drivers and conductors) who have completed more than two years of service and resolve anomalies of pay fixation and gradations.

The Association also demanded that electric buses be directly owned and managed by the KTCL and not be under the contract system as at present and directly employ under all the required KTCL employees and staff.
Addressing the ‘Maha Mellavo’, AITUC general secretary Christopher Fonseca asserted that while environment-friendly electric buses are required for Goa, all the workers and staff should however be employed by the KTCL management. New technology should not be used as a ‘Smoke screen’ to promote profit-hungry private contractors as at present, who he alleged, were out to fleece the general public and engage workers though exploitative and insecure forms of employment.
