A little over two months after the formation of the Kushavati district, the ab sence of a full-fledged admin istrative structure has meant that many residents from the region continue to approach the South Goa District Collec torate in Margao for various government services. According to Srinet Koth wale, Additional Collector-I at Margao, several com mittees have already been constituted to handle ad ministrative matters in the proposed third district. He said many cases are current ly being dealt with by com mittee heads and sub-collec tor offices, helping citizens, particularly those from re mote areas of South Goa. “Presently, everything is being handled at the sub-col lector offices. For major cas es and in the absence of a full-fledged administrative office for the third district, people are still coming to Margao. However, most cas es are being processed on line,” Kothwale said. He added that establish ing the full administrative system will take time, as a new district requires addi tional staff, offices and other provisions. Officials said the Government of Goa is work ing on budgetary allocations for the district’s functioning. The new district compris es four talukas — Sanguem, Quepem, Dharbandora and Canacona — with Quepem designated as the district headquarters. Plans have also been announced to im prove connectivity, includ ing road upgrades and spe cial bus services between Canacona and Quepem. Until the administrative framework is fully in place, the South Goa Collector con tinues to oversee the func tioning of the four talukas. However, the formation of the district has drawn objections from some resi dents and political leaders in Canacona, who argue that the taluka has stronger connectivity with Margao than with Quepem. Local groups and gram sabhas in parts of Canaco na have passed resolutions opposing its inclusion in the proposed district, saying res idents were not adequately consulted and the change could cause inconvenience. Despite the concerns, the government maintains the new district will improve governance, infrastructure and development in the re gion. For now, the Margao Collectorate continues to handle many services for residents of the four talukas.
