CANACONA: Unhappy with migrants operating their business establishments for long hours and on Sundays, Canacona Congress Block President Elvis Fernandes has accused them of exploiting labour laws and other atrocities against their staff.
In a press note, Fernandes was critical about migrants dominating business establishments in Canacona taluka. Admitting that everyone has a constitutional right to go, live, work or do business in any part of India, Fernandes however warned that “this does not mean everybody can break the labour law, so bluntly and as per their whims.”
“All over Goa, non-Goans who do business are not obeying the labour laws and they are forcefully employing local/migrant labourers for prolonged periods. As per the labour law, it should be 8 hours a day and one-day weekly off, but it has been observed that business enterprises operated by non-Goans are kept open beyond time and also on Sundays,” stated Fernandes.
