Labourers scoop out garbage, muck from Colva creek

MARGAO:  Work on cleaning up the Colva creek, which has come under some criticism recently, began on Saturday. Earthmovers were pressed into service and manual labourers were seen removing the filth in the creek.

“This is the re-cleaning of the creek. It was earlier cleaned before the monsoon last year,” said Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas.

“After this, we shall tender a monthly maintenance contract to ensure that the creek is maintained round the year, and that the creek is opened into the sea manually from time to time, which will stop stagnation of water,” he added.

“This will be the first creek in Goa to have a monthly maintenance contract, which will commission day to day cleaning by labourers, similar to the arrangement we have for the beach cleaning,” said Viegas.

He urged the Water Resources Department (WRD) which is engaged with this work to replicate this model for other creeks across Goa.
